Rules
Tired of filling out brackets that instantly blow up after the first weekend of March Madness?
So were we. That’s why we decided to “Draft the Madness.”
The concept is simple: form a group of eight people, draft eight schools each, and root your squads to victory.
But not all wins are created equally.
You'll get a flat score for every win, plus a bonus based on how often in the past your team’s seed had won in a particular round (don't worry - we crunched the data ahead of time for you).
Gather your friends, coworkers and fellow degenerate gamblers and play along!
The Draft
- Snake-style (Even-numbered rounds run in reverse order from odd-numbered rounds).
- Will include 64 schools (or "options," see rule No. 3 below); you pick 8 to fill your roster.
- Should you want to draft one of the eight teams playing in the First Four, you will draft that team AND its First Four opponent. For the remainder of the tournament, you will get credit for any wins EITHER team accumulates starting with the main draw of 64.
- Your first four draft picks MUST come from the four different regions of the bracket (this is to minimize the instances of you playing against yourself).
The Scoring
A simple formula spits out the score for each win, given the seed and the round of the winning team:
Points = 10 + 10 * (1 - P(given seed winning in given round) )
In plain terms: Every win gets 10 points and a bonus is added based on how historically improbable that seed winning in that round was.
Some examples:
- A win for a No. 1-seeded team in the Round of 64 would net 10 points: the base for any win plus no bonus because No. 1 seeds have won 100% of their first-round games.
- A win for a No. 7-seeded team in the Sweet 16 would net 19.34 points: the base amount plus a bonus of 9.34 points because historically only 6.6% of No. 7 seeds make it past the Sweet 16.
We have also decided to award a three-point bonus for any upset that has never happened before, upping the maximum number of points for a never-before-seen win to 23.
